Welcome to the Chrono Trigger wiki guide.[edit]
As the J-RPG genre cedes more and more ground to the W-RPG revolution taking over gaming consoles in America and Europe, many gamers have to look back -- way back -- to find J-RPGs truly worth their time. The 1990s represent the height of J-RPGs, with the Super Nintendo and PlayStation dominating the biggest releases, from Final Fantasy IV and VI to Wild ARMs and Tales of Destiny. Sitting somewhere comfortably in the latter-released titles for the Super Nintendo is Chrono Trigger, a game widely considered to be one of Square's masterpieces.
Regardless of Chrono Trigger's bona fide status as a quintessential RPG that everyone should play, the game has seen extremely limited release since its heyday in the mid-90s, and finding a working SNES cartridge is an expensive endeavor. Stateside, the game has only seen the light of day post-SNES once, on the PlayStation. Regrettably, the collection it was on (bundled with Final Fantasy IV and called Final Fantasy Chronicles) was a broken and jumbled mess, making it virtually unplayable. So much relief was felt when Chrono Trigger was announced to be coming to the DS, complete with myriad extras.
Chrono Trigger isn't a vast RPG like Final Fantasy VI, nor is it epically challenging to the point of being nearly impossible, like Wild ARMs. Instead, Chrono Trigger falls somewhere many classic RPGs don't, concentrating on story and characters far more than many of its contemporaries. But there's a lot to see, too, for you'll be time travelling all over the place, to the past and to the future, to save humankind from the destructive forces of a being known as Lavos. Our guide aims to get you through the game from front to end. Our Basics section runs down Chrono Trigger's finer points, while our Walkthrough will get you from point A to point Z, and everywhere in between. While Chrono Trigger is a linear affair, it becomes quite the opposite at the end of the game, and that's where our Side Quest section comes in. And, of course, our Appendices section will give you the rundown on all of the game's gear, techs, and monsters.
So, without further ado, IGN Guides presents to you our guide for Chrono Trigger DS.
In this Chrono Trigger DS strategy guide, you'll find:

Chrono Trigger DS Walkthrough[edit]
IX. A Cursed Journey |
Items to Find | Spiced Jerky, Strength Capsule (x2), Magic Capsule, Mid-Ether (x2), Mid-Potion, Shelter, Magic Scarf. |
Enemies | Skeleton, Edible Frog, Fangtooth, Ozzie (boss), Zombor (boss). |
Just like in 1000, Truce Canyon is due north of Guardia. Go into Guardia and speak with the various residences at houses, the market (though you won't want to buy anything), and at Truce Inn. You can also go through Guardia Forest to get to the castle if you so desire, and even visit the cathedral, but none of this should be done just yet. Rather, your ultimate goal is to reach Zenan Bridge, located southwest of Guardia, on a peninsula.
When you arrive at Zenan Bridge, you'll find Guardia's soldiers ready for a fight. But when you speak to the golden-armored Commander, he'll tell you that his troops are hungry, and they're fresh out of food. With that pertinent information, now you should traverse Guardia Forest (you shouldn't run into any enemies). Once you've reached the castle via the forest, speak to everyone within, including the bed-ridden King, resting after being injured in battle. But to procure food for the Commander and his hungry soldiers, you'll need to visit the kitchen in the basement of the castle. The King's Chef and the Commander are feuding brothers, as you likely learned earlier. Though the chef will resist giving you food, once you speak to him and attempt to leave the castle thereafter, he'll hand over Spiced Jerky for the troops. He'll throw in a Strength Capsule for good measure, as well!
With these items in hand, you're free to head out of the castle, back through the forest, and then back to the peninsula, where Zenan Bridge is. Guardia has taken more casualties, but when you speak to the Commander and give him his food, he and his men are rejuvenated for the near-impossible task ahead of dealing with a far greater number of soldiers. But you'll still need to help out, pressing up the bridge yourself. You'll run into a character named Ozzie, who will join Skeletons for a few battles as they try to eliminate your party. Deal with the Skeletons by way of magic; Ozzie will simply have to be struck and scared off in each fight in order to proceed.

It's when Ozzie reaches the end of the bridge that he flees, but not before summoning a powerful creature for you to deal with named Zombor. Though only represented as one enemy, Zombor actually has two segments that must be attacked, and these attacks bring different weaknesses. You'll generally need to feel Zombor out, but as far as magic attacks are concerned (which are highly recommended on this fight), you'll want to use Ice and Water attacks on the top half and Fire and Lightning attacks on the bottom half. Mixing those up will result in you slightly healing Zombor instead of damaging him, which obviously works to your disadvantage. Regardless of this danger, the fight is difficult throughout, so be patient and stay well-healed. Magic is absolutely integral here, but there are certain techs (like Robo's arm attacks and Crono's Cyclone attack) that are fairly effective as well.
With Zombor slain, you're free to head across to the far side of the bridge. Southeast of the bridge, a clearly-visible settlement can be seen. This place is known as Dorino. It has a bustling inn, a single residence to explore (where the Naga Bromide you found earlier can be traded for access to a Magic Capsule), and the village elder's house. If you need to use an inn, be sure to go back to Truce and use theirs. It's five times cheaper than the one at Dorino, so it's worth the trek.
Several villagers will let you know that the Hero destined to confront Magus is in another village located to the south. That village is known as Porre, and we'll head there shortly, but en route, you'll want to stop at the lone house surrounded by some thin woods. This location, Fiona's Villa, contains two treasure chests, each with a Mid-Ether within. Be sure to procure those two items and speak to the lone resident of the house before continuing southward. Porre has a more reasonably-priced inn for your use, present or future, as well as several other houses full of people to speak with. You'll want to definitely visit the market, at the very least, where you can find a Strength Capsule on the floor. What's more, you can purchase new helmets for the female characters in your crew, and new armor for all. Sweet!
However, all indications are that the hero we seek has gone to the Cursed Woods, due west of Porre. When you're healed, well-equipped and ready to go, journey westward and enter the Cursed Woods. As soon as you enter, defeat the initial party of Edible Frogs and Fangtooths (use magic on the former, physical attacks on the latter) and claim the Mid-Potion from the nearby treasure chest. Further up the path, more fights with Edible Frogs and Fangtooths will reveal a second treasure chest, this one containing a Shelter.
If, for whatever reason, you're having difficulty with the Edible Frogs and Fangtooth foes, consider the following technique. Edible Frogs have their name for a reason. Attack a Fangtooth with a substantial, but non-life threatening hit. If there's an Edible Frog alive in his party, he'll attack it, kill it, and siphon its health to heal itself. It'll do this only to Edible Frogs, and not even your own party, so that by continually attacking it as an exclusive target in the first round, all Edible Frogs can be reasonably eliminated before the threat of them attacking ever comes to fruition.
Once you reach the top end of the Cursed Woods, you'll see a shimmering, shaking bush. Examine the bush and you'll find that you can walk through the back end of it, into a secret subterranean room. Begin searching the room. You can find a Magic Scarf in the acorn treasure chest on the right, but as you approach the chest on the left, Frog appears! This is the hero everyone is speaking of, but even when he learns of the King's injury, he refuses to help. Standing in front of the far treasure chest so you can't gain access to it, there's little else to be done here. It appears Frog must be convinced his help is needed. And that help is found in the Denadoro Mountains, north of Porre, and due east of Dorino.
